For AGC Member Maine Drilling & Blasting, offering scholarships to local universities and technical colleges as a way to celebrate their 50 years of success fits right in with their core values of “Honesty and Hard Work”.

As an employee owned company, Maine Drilling & Blasting epitomizes the Yankee ingenuity of hard work, get it done mentality, while respecting a work/life balance.

Founded from borrowed money in 1966, Ted Purington and his wife began a legacy that started in their kitchen and grew to become the most innovative and respected company in the industry.  A true family run business, all five offspring put time into the business, and the four sons eventually became integral parts of operations and management committed to servicing the market locally. “That means local employees and resources for supply and distribution.” explains Bill Purington, President and CEO.

That’s not to say there haven’t been challenging times, but their willingness to stay flexible and innovative has led them to become the leading provider of drilling, blasting and related specialty services in the U.S.

Executive Vice President Ted Purington Jr. attributes their success to the precepts instilled by his father of “honesty, integrity and customer service”. And although they were established 50 years ago, his brothers, other family members, and the now company’s nearly 400 employees maintain these principles to this very day.

John Capasso, President (Union branch) has been on board for over 10 years and takes great pride that MD&B has been the recipient of five AGC Safety awards and a National Safety Award in 2014-something very rare for a sub-contractor. (They did not submit in 2015 due to a transition in the safety role)  He ascribes this success to the tremendous in-house training available that allows their employees to continually enhance their skills and sustain a safe, high quality, productive environment.

The newly established scholarship program is also an investment in the community. As an addition to their usual corporate contributions to local causes and events, five educational institutions will be the recipients of $1,000 per year for five years. Students who are enrolled full-time and majoring in civil engineering technology or construction management are eligible.

Having performed over two million controlled blasts for highways, site development, quarries, houses lots, utilities and marine work, Maine Drilling & Blasting also offers a variety of specialty services including: Rock Anchoring, Hoe Ramming, Engineering, Public Relations, Pre-Blast Surveys, Packaged and Bulk Explosive Distribution, and Quarry Planning in addition to Quarry Blasting. MD&B is currently registered to do business in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia with an operating hub in Auburn, NH.
