Siena Construction Corp. Celebrates 25 Years of Success

In the ever-shifting market- and economy-driven construction industry, benchmark anniversaries are no small feat. For Siena Construction, which celebrated 25 years in operation this year, their Silver Anniversary was a modest, yet impactful, affair. Siena’s President Terry Hayes recalls, “This July, we took a boat ride up and down the Charles River together as a company, and passed quite a few project landmarks along the way. It was a meaningful day.”
The Cambridge-based construction management firm was formed in 1991 by Terry’s father, Patrick Hayes. Originally from Pittsfield, Mr. Hayes eventually settled with his family in Quincy. Mr. Hayes founded Siena in Cambridge following a lengthy and successful career in construction management with Vappi Corporation, and named his new firm after his alma mater, Siena College.
Although the recession seemed an unlikely time to start a company, Siena found early positioning with ground up construction and build-outs for life sciences companies in the rapidly-expanding Cambridge biotech corridor. Siena completed ground up projects on West Kendall Street, Bent Street, and Sidney Street, which were early homes to Vertex and Millennium Pharmaceuticals, among others. Today, as a full-service construction manager and general contractor, Siena’s work can be seen throughout New England, with the majority of their clients returning for repeat business. Their client list includes biotech firms (Novartis, Takeda, Alkermes), universities (MIT, Harvard), media companies (Legendary Entertainment, Brickyard VFX), financial institutions (First Republic Bank), historic renovations, and restaurants.
Terry joined his father’s firm right after graduating college in 1997 (also from Siena College). He shares that much of Siena’s present day philosophy has carried over from the company’s early days. “To stay competitive, we aim to consistently provide a perfect product and maintain honest and open communication with our clients,” Terry says. The results are long-term relationships that assure a measured and deliberate growth.
Chief Operating Officer George Poulos, who has been with Siena for 15 years, agrees. “This approach may take more effort at the end of the day, but the respect gained is immeasurable,” George says. “I believe our client relationships speak to that mutual respect, and that’s a critical part of our business strategy.”
Terry envisions steady growth that will continue to focus on “meeting clients’ expectations and trust with accountability and honesty,” and adds that he is proud of his team and their dynamics.
With over 40 employees, Siena perpetuates a progressive culture that is fully transparent and promotes self-motivation and community. Director of Commercial Construction Anthony Di Carlo, now in his 5th year with Siena, says, “Open discussions in the workplace are an organic part of Siena’s philosophy. It motivates you to know who you’re working with, and that goes a long way when it comes to collaborating.” The healthy combination of work-life balance has created an exceptional group of people who take full ownership of their work.
Certainly their attention to detail and meticulous services set them apart, but it’s their dedication to community that gives each employee a sense of fulfillment and confirms that what they are doing really matters. Time off for volunteer efforts is a given and employees are supportive of one another’s efforts.
Currently, George is spear-heading a cause that is near to his heart called Razia’s Ray of Hope Foundation. George grew up in Marshfield with the son of Razia Jan, who is working to improve the lives of women and children enduring through years of upheaval in Afghanistan. On November 2, Siena will host a documentary film screening that focuses on Razia Jan and the founding of the Zabuli Education Center, the first all-girls school in rural Afghanistan that has become a celebrated symbol of progress and the advancement of women. So while there will be no big parties to celebrate their anniversary, the firm continues on with modesty and respect for those that do their job within the organization, the construction industry, and the community as a whole.
Terry reflected on Siena’s most recent accomplishments, believing that if his father were sitting at this table today, he would be impressed to see Siena’s responsiveness to how the market is changing and how the company has leveraged his institutional knowledge to get there. “I think he’d be proud to see how his core values have carried on from generation to generation. Although we’ve grown beyond the term ‘family business’, to me it will always feel like one.”
