Negotiation is a hot button topic among emerging professionals today. This YCPI /YDPDI session focused on negotiations between agencies and entities. We were joined by guest lecturers Mary Feeney, Esq. of Bowditch & Dewey LLP and David Hancock of CBT Architects. We opened with short presentations from Dave and Mary on negotiation “best practices” they’ve developed over the years. The second half of our session was a mock public meeting discussing the development of a 50-acre office park in the hypothetical town of Lopton. We divided into three stakeholder groups to pitch our cases, receive feedback, and engage in a “high stakes” negotiation. Read more

Sometimes it’s an “AHA” moment for those who decide to go into construction and for others it’s a gradual realization through personal experiences. Carli was literally a baby when her father began bringing her to his residential job sites, so obviously she may not remember everything. But she does recall a lifetime of looking at specs and blue prints, of walking job-sites and seeing and hearing the passion her father had for his hobby of building homes. Read more

If you were to say that Haylee had been somewhat focused on her career path as young as high school it would be an understatement. As a freshman at Greater Lowell Tech, she made her final choice of concentrated studies the Carpentry trade and flourished from there. For her first three years she worked on mill work projects and small residential homes. By the time she was a senior she was more than capable to shadow as a carpenter with a GC on larger residential projects. Loving the work, she shares this is where she learned how to interact and collaborate with other trades. Read more
